After-Market products in Belgium and the Netherlands

In certain European countries, the operational setup of Transmission System Operators as well as the regulatory framework allow for trading in the After-Market timeframe. This means market participants can trade local hourly and 15 minutes contracts even after delivery.

When power is traded after delivery, all the information on power generation and consumption is available. Market participants can then adjust their positions as needed with After-Market contracts. This reduces their imbalance cost.

Complementary to the Intraday market

EPEX SPOT and its clearing house European Commodity Clearing (ECC) launched the new After-Market products in January 2021. Electricity can be traded until 12:30 pm CET for the Belgian market, and until 8:30 am on the day after delivery CET on the Dutch market. Since the launch, several members have registered for trading on this new segment.

Gate closure in Intraday continuous trading is five minutes before delivery. At delivery time, the After-market product opens, and positions can be balanced after delivery.
